“Justice Series” Turns Old Case Into New Business
“It all started with a phone call,” says filmmaker and owner of Oakley Productions, Liz Oakley. Yarborough Applegate Law Firm was looking for a new way to reach co-counsel and potential new clients. “Everything we saw online, even at the highest levels, was all starting to look the same. Our firm is unique and we wanted a promotional tool that reflected that,” says Yarborough Applegate attorney Liam Duffy. “We have long trusted Liz to bring more value to our cases so I thought why not call and do a little brainstorming.” Oakley returned with a new concept designed to convert landmark wins into new business by sharing the story and strategy that led to the victory. William Applegate, lead attorney on the case that inspired the Justice Series says, “It’s a novel approach with an educational element that clearly illustrates what makes us different.”
The idea didn’t come overnight, it evolved as a case that Liz Oakley was deeply involved in came to a rather dramatic conclusion. “It was such an unbelievable story of a preventable tragedy, and at the heart of it is this amazing young man fighting for his life. And beside him, throughout it all, is this firm that is not following a traditional litigation script.” In the end the case resolved for a substantial monetary settlement coupled with transformative corporate policy changes. “It was an incredible moment, these lawyers were heroes,” but Oakley noticed that after all of the initial recognition, the story ended up as a little block of text at the bottom of a web page. The revelation came then said Oakley, “I thought, If people knew the story behind that case Yarborough Applegate wouldn’t have to promote the firm.” In response, Oakley Productions developed the Justice Series, a cinematic experience that shares the story of a case from the point of view of the plaintiff and additional Behind the Case File videos sharing the challenges faced and the strategies that led to the big win.
Once the project was greenlit, Oakley Productions brought on Academy-Award nominated filmmaker Sara Nesson to direct the first Justice Series, Justice for Jacob. “Working with Jacob and his family on this project was a profound experience and I was honored to receive their trust to re-tell their story in a creative and cinematic way. For me, it was a real lesson in bravery and sacrifice and it was clear that for the law firm the fight became personal.”
